Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends,
On Monday, June 29th, members from locals participating in the Extendicare Central Bargaining table will be boarding buses in Ottawa, Sudbury, and the GTA to attend a solidarity rally being held outside the Extendicare’s head office, located at 3000 Steeles Avenue East in Markham, ON from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. As Long-Term Care workers, the members of these eight locals do not have the right to strike in Ontario. Their employer is using that fact to disengage from bargaining, relying on the flawed Interest Arbitration process in hopes they can break CUPE’s pattern of strong wage increases in the sector.
The Extendicare Central Table agreement has, for the past eight years, set the precedent for collective bargaining within the sector. For-profit employers like Extendicare are trying to break this pattern so they can once again flatten wages and weaken working conditions in the sector.
These members aren’t just fighting for themselves; they are fighting for all long-term care and retirement home workers in Ontario. We need to show up and support. Due to high workloads, high-demands, and low wages, many members in these locals are unable to take the day off to attend the rally. There are currently seats available on the following buses:
Sudbury: https://actionnetwork.org/events/care-cant-wait-solidarity-rally-at-extendicare-head-office/
Ottawa (east pick up location): https://actionnetwork.org/events/care-cant-wait-solidarity-rally-at-extendicare-head-office-4/
Ottawa (west pick up location): https://actionnetwork.org/events/care-cant-wait-solidarity-rally-at-extendicare-head-office-5/
Durham: https://actionnetwork.org/events/care-cant-wait-solidarity-rally-at-extendicare-head-office-2/
Your support is greatly appreciated.
