Support striking CUPE 1281-33 members

TO ALL CUPE CHARTERED ORGANIZATIONS

Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends:

Members of CUPE 1281-33 have been on strike since October 27, 2025. Their employer, the York University Faculty Association, came to the table with more than 100 concessions.

While many of the concessions were eventually withdrawn, these CUPE members are still fighting for key proposals that involve job security, health and safety, and harassment and discrimination.

We are appealing to CUPE chartered organizations across the country to send letters of support, and to give a financial contribution to CUPE 1281-33 members. Financial support can be sent to CUPE 1281-33, c/o Gavin Nowlan, Secretary-Treasurer, 25 Wood Street, Suite 102, Toronto, Ontario M4Y 2P9. Electronic funds can be sent to secretarytreasurer@cupe1281.ca.

Attacks to Municipal Water Services

Hi everyone,

My name is Krista Laing and I am the Chair of the CUPE Ontario Municipal Workers Committee, I am reaching out because Bill 60 is moving quickly, and we all need to be on the same page about what it means for our water and wastewater systems. Bill 60 opens the door for private operators (Municipal Service Corporations) to take over municipal water and wastewater services, shifting control away from municipalities and potentially putting public safety, quality standards, and long-term costs at risk. This bill could have major impacts on staffing, workloads, and accountability in our communities.

If you’re receiving this email, it’s because our records indicate your local includes water and/or wastewater workers. If this isn’t accurate, please reply and let me know so we can update our information.

To support locals as we push back, we’re hosting an important webinar.

Please share the link below with all of your members — everyone benefits from understanding what Bill 60 means for public services:

We’re also encouraging workers to stay connected and support each other — especially as Peel is being used as a testing ground for water privatization.
Please share this link for workers to join the Waste App space so we can organize together, protect our jobs, and keep our water systems public:

Thanks in advance for helping us get this information out widely. Protecting public water is going to take all of us working together.

Please stay tuned for more information to come.

In solidarity,

Support Striking CUPE 4317 Members

TO ALL CUPE CHARTERED ORGANIZATIONS

Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends:

The 32 members of CUPE Local 4317 have been on strike at the Port of Montreal since September 22. It has now been seven weeks since they have been fighting for a fair collective agreement, yet negotiations remain at a standstill.

These workers – transport agents for the Montreal Gateway Terminals company – play a vital role in the supply chain on which we all depend. Every day, they coordinate the arrivals and departures of containers, ensuring the port operates efficiently. Their struggle is simple and legitimate: to obtain decent wages and real respect for their work.

Instead of negotiating in good faith, the employer is now threatening to eliminate positions, citing technological changes as a pretext to further weaken these workers. In this difficult context, union solidarity is more important than ever. The members of CUPE Local 4317 need the support of their allies across the country to make their voices heard and to show that no CUPE local fights alone.

We are calling on CUPE chartered organizations across Canada to stand in solidarity by sending letters of support and contributing financially to sustain their struggle.

Letters of support can be sent to: custeau1@msn.com.

Donations can be sent to CUPE Local 4317, c/o Quebec Regional Office, 565 Crémazie Blvd East, Suite 7100, Montreal, Quebec H2M 2V9. Electronic Fund Transfers (EFTs) can be sent to cgirard@scfp.ca.
